Santa Anita Sunday January 20th

Had a beautiful two days down in Arcadia. The weather was perfectly clear, about 70 degrees. It's amazing- the things you can learn by hanging around in the right places at the right time at the track. Did pretty well with my handicapping, enough to pay all my expenses and come home with a few bucks to boot.

Today, we like one in the 7th race. The horse is named El Manuel, #1 on the program.

Aqueduct And Santa Anita Thursday January 17th

Finally received a call from my east coast source last night. They told me they have one going in the 7th at Aqueduct. The horse is named Benlayla and is number 3 on the program.

We also have one at Santa Anita today..2nd race, named La Tee, number 1 on the program..this horse is only 2-1 on the morning line, but should win for fun.

Won't be around for a few days after today. Going to take a little trip down Santa Anita way and visit some friends and associates.

How About Those Chargers

Just watched San Diego upset the Indiannapolis Colts..Gotta give it to the Chargers for going into that dome and frankly just outplaying the Colts. Peyton Manning seemed a little off today but maybe the Chargers just figured out a way to beat Indy the way few have. I cannot remember a defense shutting down one of the game's great quarterbacks when they needed to like the Chargers did today.

The game did go over the total of 45.5, so we salvaged something.

Sports Betting Good Year So Far

Well, with last nights winner Houston in the NBA, we are up to a 6-0-1 record betting sports so far this year. Not a bad start to 2008.

Looking forward to tonight's NFC game..we are on Green Bay minus 8 points.. Tomorrow we have Indy minus 9 and over 45.5.

Nothing so far for tonights NBA action, but that may change..stay tuned..

AFC Playoff Game Sunday January 13th

We are taking the Colts here minus the 9 points. This will probably be Tony Dungy's last year as we hear that he is considering retirement. Look for the Colts to blow out the Chargers in a high scoring affair. With the total at 45.5, we are also making a play on the over..

Indy minus 9 and over 45.5

NBA Friday January 11th

Our first NBA selection of the year is tonight. We are taking Houston at home minus 10.5 points.
They should run all over the Timberwolves at home on a Friday night.

Houston minus 10.5

Santa Anita Friday January 11th

Well, our selection Madame Kiaweh ran third in the last race yesterday after being 14 lengths behind at the half mile pole. She came flying in the stretch but it was way too little too late.

Today, we are going with a horse in the first race, number 2 on the program- The Five J's.

Apparently, Santa Anita will be replacing the cushion track with dirt in the next week or so. They will have two days of turf only racing next week to allow for the conversion to take place.

Santa Anita So Far Today

Been watching the races via the internet today and the track looks good. It is playing very fair with horses coming off the pace to win in the last two races on the dirt. One horse did break down at about the quarter pole in the 4th race turns out because of bleeding-nothing to do with the surface, but otherwise it looks like a fair track.

Let's just pray for dry weather until the issue is resolved. Just waiting for the 8th race today to see how our selection, Madame Kiawah does.

Good Luck!

Santa Anita News Just In!

The management of Santa Anita racetrack has announced today, Thursday January 10th that if track patrons bring one pound of dirt to the track and present it at the admission gate, they will receive free admission for the day.

If they receive enough dirt via this method, they promise to resume racing and guarantee that the remainder of the meet will be run at Santa Anita. They advise patrons to "please bring the dirt to the admission gates..do not try to place the dirt yourself onto the track". They also advised that "anybody sneaking onto the grounds and trying to steal this precious dirt will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law"

Anybody bringing more than one pound of dirt may receive a free program and Racing Form..

Just Kidding!!

Santa Anita Today

No telling exactly what the surface is now on the main track at Santa Anita. I read that they are putting good old fashioned dirt back down on it to try to get through the meet and then deal with it over the summer as far as which synthetic surface to use.

With that in mind, the show must go on. We have one play today and that is Madame Kiawah in the last race, number 9 on the program.

Let's watch a few races today and see how the track holds up and if there is a new bias or trend. Of course, it always seems that early speed has the advantage over closers and I'm thinking that it won't change anytime soon.

NFL Saturday NFC Playoff Game

It's down to eight teams in the NFL playoff race and the first game we like is Saturday's NFC game- Seattle at Green Bay. We are taking the Packers here minus the 8 points. This is looking like possibly the last hurrah for Packers QB Brett Favre and we look for them to blow out the Seahawks in front of the home crowd. The weather will be typical Green Bay in January with temperatures in the mid 20's and a 20% chance of snow showers. No dome here.

Pack minus 8.

Santa Anita Track Problems

The CHRB will hold a teleconference today to discuss the possibility of moving some or all of Santa Anita's races over to Hollywood Park for the current meet. Too bad there is nothing that can be done about the surface at Santa Anita as far as standing up to a rainstorm, but I think whoever designed the composition of the synthetic surface should have known or been told that it rains alot in Southern California in January and Feburary.

Personally, I have never done well over at Hollywood but that could change. For some reason, I just do better at Santa Anita, maybe it's all in my head. The setting at Santa Anita is unmatched as far as I'm concerned and maybe that just creates a better environment for me as a bettor when I actually do get down to the track.

Here in Nevada, the best way for me to operate, is to go in, make the plays for the day, and get out. Can't stand the idea of sitting in a casino all day with all the extra noise and confusion around.

I hope they resolve the surface situation at Santa Anita for all of us that wait for this meet to roll around every year. The meet like no other on a course like no other in the world.

First Week In Review

So, how did we do here since 2007? Of course, it was December 31st,2007 when I started this blog and not a bad week at all, it was..We gave out six football selections, five of those won and one was a push. We gave out one horse which won and paid $10.00. Then, the whole weekend card was cancelled due to rain at our favorite track, Santa Anita..So far, it's been fun and I kinda like the idea of putting our selections out for the world to see.

I am working on adding some other things to this site right now. Hopefully it will be something that you will enjoy and thanks for reading..

Good First Week

Saturday's Wild Card games went well with Seattle blowing out Washington 35-14 and covering just as we thought. Of course, we got a push on the Jacksonville game with the Jaguars winning by two points, and they almost blew that game last night. Their quarterback single-handedly won that game for them with that 32 yard run late in the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh showed alot of heart to come back in the second half the way they did but Jacksonville just has more talent on their side.

We have one play left for today..The Chargers minus 9 . Don't think you can get that now as I have read that they have moved to minus 10 and even 10.5 at some places.

Racing Cancelled At Santa Anita- What?

Wow! After all that, the Saturday card was cancelled due to too much rain on the new racing surface. Seems they have drainage problem with the new cushion track. I remember being at Santa Anita back in 1993 and it rained for 5 straight days, and they did have to cancel the ninth race one day because there were huge divots in the track from all the runoff, but other than that, they ran all of the races despite the surface. I remember having a pretty good week there that time.
Too bad this has to happen but it is for the best as far as the safety of the jockeys and horses is concerned. Apparently, the poor drainage causes the wax part of the surface to gum up and it could cause injury to the horses.

We'll get em tomorrow!

Santa Anita Today

Looks like wet weather all weekend at the Great Race Place. Received word on a horse this morning going in the 4th race today..Spoils Of Excess, number 5 on the program.

Let's see how the new "all weather track" holds up during the wet spell they are having in California. I guess they seal it just like they used to do when they had plain, old, regular dirt. Watched a few races yesterday and it looked good, played very fair with horses on the lead and coming from off the pace winning. Let's hope it keeps the horses healthier just like it's supposed to. Kudos to Garrett Gomez for his ride on our selection, Lemon the other day. He rode that horse perfect. Always patient until he needs to ask for run from a horse. That's what I like to see in a jockey. And of course, the drive to win races that Garrett has. Reminds me of another great jockey, Laffit Pincay Jr.

NFL Football Sunday January 6th

Just got word that the money is coming in pretty strong on San Diego for Sunday's AFC Wild Card game with Tennessee. The Chargers are favored by 9, but that may change. I would take San Diego minus the 9, or maybe 9.5, but wouldn't want to go any higher for fear of landing on that key number of 10.

I think that key numbers are crucial in football betting. Any time a team is favored by 7,10,13.14 etc. it poses a problem when deciding whether to make a play. The bookies know this and tend to play their hand a little when they make a team- say 7.5 favorite. That tells me that they really like that favorite more than that, but are looking to keep the line over 7 to attract action on the underdog without raising it too much. Same with 10.5, 13.5. 14.5..etc.

Just a little info to maybe think about the next time you see that type of line on a game.

Money Management At The Track

The most important part of trying to make money betting on horses, I think, is how you manage your money. You can be the best handicapper in the world, and if you do not manage your betting bankroll in an intelligent way, you will still lose. You must be able to pass races on the card that you do not like. This can be difficult, especially here in Nevada racebooks when there is a race going off somewhere it seems like all the time. You should concentrate on the plays that have the best chance of making money for you. I find the best way for me is to make my selections in the type of races I like to handicap and to stick with those selections and that's it. No second-guessing myself, hey if I bet a loser, I bet a loser. At least I'm not wondering well..if I had maybe done this..or that..or whatever. Those kind of thoughts play against your confidence and for me, it's just better to stick with what I like. Most of the time, I go in, make my bets for the day, get tomorrow's Racing Form, and go home. I can watch the races on my computer whether live, or the replay. Same result. More sanity. Check out this article..very good.

Hope Somebody Has Been Reading.....

Well, so far been perfect here with these selections. Hope that somebody has been at least reading this blog and gaining some valuable information. Funny thing about all this, is that is hard as a beginning blogger to know if anybody is even reading it. Oh well, I have made a few bucks this week so far myself. Would be nice to know that I was able to share with somebody.

Ever wonder if you are just talking to yourself?

NFL Wild Card Picks For Saturday January 5th

So far so good in 2008 as far as football goes. Let's see how we do with some NFL picks.
On Saturday we like Seattle at home minus 3.5. We also are taking Jacksonville on the road in Pittsburgh minus 2.

Both teams have excellent records in these situations against the spread.

Fiesta Bowl Pick

Looks like West Virginia is the play here getting 4.5 points. Went 2 for 2 on Tuesday with Missouri and Michigan both covering. Let's make it 3 for 3 and get off to a good start in 2008.
