Free Selection For Thursday, November 20th

We will release one of our selections here today. There are only two games tonight in the NBA after a full slate was played last night. Our free selection is the Lakers and Suns to go under the total of 207. Let's see if Shaq and Kobe hug and kiss at mid-court before the game tonight. Kobe should tell Shaq where he can kiss him after Shaq's lame attempt at dissing Kobe in that "rap" over the summer.

We had a fantastic weekend in college football going 11-1, a new record for us here. You can check out all of our handicapping packages at www.vegasturfandsports.com.

Sluggish Start To NBA Season

To be perfectly honest, the beginning of the NBA season has not been that great over here. We have gone 11-10 so far this season, which is not even close to being up to par for us at vegasturfandsports.com. We have gone 73-48 in the NBA since 1-1-2008 though, which is just over 60 percent.

Seems to be a season of change with all of the coaches moving around the league. The Knicks are a much faster paced team this year with Mike D'antoni as their coach. But the other night, they went into San Antonio and were stymied by the Spurs defense. The Spurs surprisingly, have been pretty horrible so far this year as they seem to have slowed to a crawl and are missing Manu Ginobili's spark in the lineup as he is out with an injury.

The Suns with new head coach Terry Porter, have slowed their pace somewhat but it seems to depend on who they are playing. The Lakers look like the team to beat this year as they have been crushing teams with their defense so far this season. The champion Celtics are also starting right where they left off last year and are winning close games with their defense.

Our numbers will get better as more games are played, that we can be sure of. We will tread lightly and watch and wait to pounce on the bookie. December will be a very good month over here, so stay tuned.

Zenyatta Should Roll

Tomorrow, the ladies get their chance to strut their stuff around the Santa Anita oval. Friday's Breeder's Cup races are all fillies and mares and in the seventh race, it is all about the undefeated Zenyatta. She is a huge, long-striding filly who is 3-5 on the morning line to win the Ladies Classic and she should be. No reason to try to go up against her in here. We will just watch her run and enjoy the race.

We do have all of our selections set for the Breeder's Cup of 2008. You can sign up to receive all 12 of them ( we are not going up against Curlin, either) for just $99.00 and that includes our daily Southern California selections right up until the end of the Hollywood meet on December 21st. Oak Tree Free Selection For Sunday October 19th

Today's eighth race is the featured Anoakia Stakes for 2 year old fillies. Bob Baffert is sending out two runners in here and we like the chances of one of them. We are going with Toro Bonito who was probably overmatched in the Oak Leaf and gets a rider switch to Rafael Bejarano. She is also shortening back up to a sprint and she should give a good showing of herself in today's event.

We have a solid seven plays going in the NFL today also and are working hard on the Breeder's Cup card. Go to www.vegasturfandsports.com and sign up for one of our very affordable packages to receive all of our premium selections.

Sunday Free Selection For Del Mar

Even though we think that the ride we got from Victor Espinoza yesterday was terrible with our selection of Bad Boy, we will try again with him today in the 7th race. Going with Comedy Girl, number one. She is 5-1 on the morning line, which apparently does not mean much since yesterday's horse Bad Boy was 8-1 on the morning line and opened at 3-2. Somebody out there betting big??

We all thought that he moved way too early with Bad Boy yesterday. The horse that was leading was going way too fast early in the race and was going to come back to the field without question. Why Victor decided to take off after that horse before the half-mile pole is beyond me. Of course, he may have lost anyway, but at least give the horse a chance make his move turning for home and have something left for deep stretch.

Victor Espinoza is one of the best out there though so we'll give him the chance to make up for it today.

Del Mar Free Selection For Saturday

Going to try and tackle the 7th race today, which is one of the toughest races on the card. There is value in here and we think that it is with #6 Bad Boy. This guy ran against some nice horses last year. He took a couple of months off earlier this year, and looks to be rounding back into form for this event. Let's hope the odds stay up there around his 8-1 morning line.

Del Mar Thursday Free Selection

Yesterday's freebie came through going wire to wire and paying $6.80, we'll take it. This meet so far has been a tough one to say the least. I think that trainers are a huge key at Del Mar. You have to be in tune with their moves and intention in specific races.

Today, we will go with a horse in the third race named Tribal Mischief. Let's make it two in a row!

Del Mar Wednesday July 30th Free Selection

Today's second race is a maiden claiming event and we have one going in here. Our free selection today is Brite Ruler, number 2. This horse should get an easy lead today and be able to go gate to wire. He is listed at 5-2 on the morning line and hopefully the morning line favorite Sunshine In will get overbet and our horse will go off 3-1 or better. We like Joel Rosario taking the call here.

Turf Handicapping Methods

Been doing some research lately with horse handicapping methods. I have found that in turf races, with their different pace scenarios and race riding strategies, the approach should be somewhat different than in dirt or synthetic races.

On dirt or synthetic, especially in sprints, horses are pushed from start to finish and gradually the whole field will begin to slow down the longer the race progresses. The winner is usually the horse that slows down at a lesser rate than the others.

On the turf, jockeys are looking to position themselves early to be in place for the all out run from the top of the stretch to the wire. The early pace in turf racing is usually very slow and late speed is what will win. What we should look for are the horses that finish the last portion of the race in under 24 seconds per quarter mile at today's class level or higher. So, in one mile races on the grass, the final quarter should be run in 24 seconds and under. In one mile and one sixteenth races, it should be run in under 30 seconds and in one mile and one eighth races, it should be run in under 36 seconds.

The method to use to find out a horse's final fraction is to note the time at the pace call, usually the three-quarter mark, subtract that from the final time and also subtract one fifth of a second for each length gained or add one fifth of a second for each length lost in the final fraction.

The other major factor to consider in turf races is class. "Class on the grass" still holds true. Classier animals will just outfinish the competition. Horses dropping in class or staying at the same level who have performed well recently on the grass and who can finish fastest will win more than their share of races.

Horses with class advantages that have been running longer than today's race and are proven at today's distance are good bets also. This is due to the stamina building that results from the longer distances. They will still have that closing kick in them and should finish well enough to win in most cases. There is nothing stronger than stamina and determination along with the class that goes with it when looking for a winner on the turf.

Del Mar Saturday Free Selection

Today we will release one of our Del Mar plays as a free selection here. In the 2nd race, we are going with the number 2 horse, Dee Rain. He is dropping back down to the level of his last win and is working sharply for his return having last raced on June 8th. Martin Pedroza will ride and we expect a big effort here at around 10 to 1 odds.

Free Selection From Vegas Turf And Sports

Today's free selection is a baseball total again. The Phillies and Mets square off in an early Thursday game with Moyer and Perez pitching. The total is at 9.5 under -1.30 and we are jumping on the under before it moves to 9 as it has in some places already.

We have two horses going today at Del Mar for our members at http://www.vegasturfandsports.com/. We have had a few nice winners over at the seaside oval since the meet started last Wednesday, and are showing a slight profit with flat bets. Seems that the number one handicapping factor down there is trainer angles and the longer the meet goes, the better we will get at uncovering nice winners at juicy prices.

Del Mar Free Selection For Monday July 21st

Today we are taking a longshot in the fourth race. This is a maiden event at one mile on the turf and a wide open affair. Looking for a price with a horse named Trufflesfromheaven, trained by Mike Puype and ridden by Brice Blanc.

These types of races regularly produce nice payoffs and "Truffles" has a nice shot to win this one.

Del Mar Free Selection For Friday July 18th

This evening's card features the CTBA Stakes for 2-year old fillies and goes as the 7th race. I think that Wesley Ward's trainee Streaming Heat has a big chance here. Ward is very good with 2 year olds and he places her here with strong intentions. She has had four nice works since her maiden win June 5th at Hollywood and her breeding suggests she loves sprinting.

Del Mar Opens With Record Crowd

There were over 43,000 people at Del Mar yesterday on opening day, a new record. I was watching to see how the track was playing and after the first race, I thought that it was going to be like last year. In the 1 mile event on the Polytrack, two horses sped away from the field and burned each other up, allowing the closers to come like a giant wave from the Pacific through the stretch as the two frontrunners tired badly.

I think that it was just too fast an early pace because in the ninth and final race of the day, a maiden claiming race, the winner went straight to the front and led all the way. Closers bias? Not sure yet as one day of racing is not enough to really come to any conclusion. The final times for the races on the Poly were slow, but the early fractions were not too bad. We are going to have to see some more races to acertain whether there is any type of bias present. Of course, we will attempt to take advantage of anything we do notice as far as surface is concerned.

We had a total of five plays yesterday winning with two. Our 4th race selection Carona Time would up dead-heating for the win after a very wide trip into the stretch. Carona Time paid $5.40 to win. The other winner was a good one, Dixie Chatter in the eighth race, the second division of the Oceanside Stakes. Dixie Chatter paid $15.00.

We look to have at least three solid plays a day over at Del Mar. Sign up for a membership package at www.vegasturfandsports.com.

Del Mar Opens Tomorrow!

I cannot say whether this time of year is better or the day after Christmas when Santa Anita opens is, but I for one am sure happy to see the southern California circuit moving down to Del Mar starting tomorrow. There is no place like the seaside oval, and probably never will be although I have never been to Saratoga so I can't say for sure.

I remember being at Del Mar as a kid and seeing Bill Shoemaker walking by after the races along with Don Pierce, Jerry Lambert among others. Those were great days, the late sixties and early seventies. There was a young rider named Rudy Rosales who was tearing it up back then. Wonder what ever happened to him?

Tomorrow will give some kind of indication as to how the track will be playing after last year's complaints from some of the horsemen about the heat causing problems for their horses. They have a wax element in the Polytrack that begins to melt down with excessive heat. They say they have rectified the situation for this year's meet. We will wait and see. Last year the track was more favorable to closers because the track was very tiring to frontrunners. We will attempt to take advantage of any bias that we can spot when making our selections, and you should be too.

Visit www.vegasturfandsports to sign up for our expert selections for Del Mar from Joey D.

Orleans Hotel July 4th Qualifying Handicapping Tournament-What A Day!

Friday the Fourth was a great day for the crew over here. I entered my first "real" thoroughbred handicapping tournament over at the Orleans Hotel. It was the Firecracker Qualifyer and it was very enjoyable and to say the least, very exciting! The entry fee was $100 and the idea was to finish in the top five to receive a free entry into the Horse Player World Series in 2009 where the payoffs can be huge. The format was to select 12 races with a mythical $20 win and $20 place bet and your total mutuel returns were added up to form your point total.

I knew going in that I would need somewhere between 1100 and 1500 points to have a chance so the handicapping strategy is a little different than in your every day approach because you have to look for horses with a good chance of winning at a very nice price. The first race that I selected for the contest proved to be the beginning of an emotional roller-coaster of a day. I used a first time starter with breeding that suggested that he may like the slop over at Churchill Downs where it was raining heavily and he came in and paid $21.40 and $11.40, good for 328 points. I knew if I could get two or three more of those in, I would cash and qualify for the big one. I stuck to my guns for the next hour or so using my original selections which were going off at nice odds, but kept running second and third by small margins mostly with 10 to 1 shots and higher. This was making the rest of the morning frustrating to put it mildly, but those place mutuels were good and they were adding to my point total which had grown to 516.0.

As the afternoon rolled along, some of my initial selections were getting bet down to unacceptable odds so I was looking for something that would get me one more huge point payoff. The sixth at Hollywood was coming up, a maiden race and I noticed that there was a first timer in there with Richard Migliore riding. After seeing that this horse was almost 20-1 and that the rest of the field was beatable due to unimpressive Beyers for the level and some other angles that I use in maiden races, I took a shot with Bella Dancer and "The Mig".

Going 5 1/2 furlongs, Richie broke this horse well from the number two post and gained the lead on the backstretch and she slowly edged clear from the favorite and began to open up in the stretch. What a moment as he drew away to win by almost six lengths. I did not hear anyone else yelling as loud as I was and of course, I was hoping that I was the only one that had her in the contest. The horse had gone off at 23-1 and paid $48.60 to win and $16.80 to place. The contest had a rule as far as capping anything over 20-1 after the first $2.00 of the bet, but it gave me an additional 594.6 points, bringing my total up to 1110.6.

I had one more selection going. It was in the Flawlessly Stakes. The horse was Ginger Pop and she was going up against Lethal Heat and several other exceptional fillies but she looked to me as though she could pull it off at 9-1. She finished second after running a great race behind Starry Pursuit and paid $9.80 to place making my final tally 1208.6.

I wound up finishing third in the contest and qualifying for the World Series, which was my goal for the day. It was a great event, very intense and a great learning experience along with one helluva ride on a wave of emotions. The folks over at the Orleans race book are first class and treated us all very well and the facilities are excellent over there for playing the horses.

See you at the World Series in February of 2009!

Online Sports Handicapping Services And Websites

Wow! After recently deciding to publish a site on the web to market my services, I have notice while checking out the competition, that most of these "handicapping" sites are just a ripoff. I have read reviews on the different cappers and their sites, and it seems that 85% of what I read was negative. Why go through the trouble of handicapping games if all you care about is marketing and B.S. to sell your picks? Hmmm..maybe that is the problem, some of these "handicappers" do not even bother to actually provide the service that they advertise, they just try to market their name or theme, and hope for the best as far as picking games or horses for their customers.

I have worked in a non-related industry in recent years. It is a service-based type of business in which you market your products and services to people and businesses, hoping to keep them as customers long term. Why go through the effort of getting customers, only to provide shoddy service, lose them and the income that they provide and have them leave unhappy and remorseful? There are some sites out there that have a place for people to go in and post reviews. Why would you risk the chance of being labled a ripoff "service"?

Why not just provide the best possible service that you can at an affordable price and build a large clientele? I would rather have 200 happy customers at a low price than 20 unhappy customers at a ridiculous price who will just leave anyway and possibly spread the word about you online and by word of mouth. All you can do is to try and put your best effort forth when handicapping. The customer should realize that the idea is to win money over the long run and not what happened yesterday or last week. I think that a handicapping service could have a long and profitable life in business if they just followed that theory instead of just trying to "get their money" and move on to the next "live one". My site-www.vegasturfandsports.com, is still under construction, I will be concentrating on that over the coming weeks, but will still try to post a free selection here once in awhile.

If you are a handicapper yourself who may be interested in having your own website to market your service, I have a good friend who will set you up with your own site and help you get started and also provide all of the support services to maintain your site so that all you have to worry about is picking winners. In today's first race, we are going with Helmsgold, number six. He was just edged last time out by one of our winners-Mikey Bones. Handicapping The Horses-Trip Notes And Track Bias

One of the ways you can get a jump on the competition (the other bettors at the track and simulcast locations), is to keep accurate, detailed records of the things that you see during the running of the races. We call these "Trip Notes" and what they consist of are notations that you can make during or after the race. These notations can be made when you see a horse experience some kind of trouble during the running of the race or at the start. Look for things especially that are not too obvious as the most obvious incidents will be also be noted by your competition, the other astute handicappers in the crowd.

One of the things I like to look for are a bad start, then the horse makes a strong middle move during the race on the backstretch and gets into contention, then falls back late. If this horse comes back within a 14 day period, I give it a strong chance next time out. Also, look for horses in a sprint race that make a fast move of any kind during the middle of the race, especially those races which are the first or second races after a layoff. When they are stretched out next time to a route race and have proven that they can win routing, they deserve a second look. This signifies that the horse is fit and competitive and is ready to win if the trainer is smart enough to place him at the right class level and distance next time out.

Another way to gain an advantage over the crowd is to take note of track bias when it occurs. You can take a look at the charts for each day or watch the replays and take note of any trend toward a certain running style as far as the winners are concerned. If all or most of the winners for that day led or were very close to the pace, the track may have been favoring speed. This is true especially if there were a couple of long shot winners that day that got loose on the lead and were aided by the bias. You can also note where on the track the winners were running; inside or outside. If a horse was making a strong move but came very wide into the stretch against a bias that favored inside early speed, he may be worth an extra look next time out. You can develop a nice "Horses to Watch" list from this method that works well and gives you an advantage when looking at their upcoming races.

You should still apply your other handicapping principles to the races when these horses return, but these two methods will help you uncover some nice winners that the crowd may overlook because they did not do the extra work of taking trip notes and checking for biases.

With yesterday's free selection winning, along with the member's only selections, we are currently on a 7-2 streak in Major League Baseball. Free Selections From Vegas Turf And Sports

Our free baseball total was a winner yesterday as the Dodgers and Reds went over the total bringing our record here for free selections to 63-38-3 on the sports side. Our members selection Ms. Toomsuba ran second at 9-1 yesterday and just missed winning in the second race at Hollywood Park.

Tonight we go with the under in the Reds vs. Yankees game. The Reds travel to New York for an interleague series with the Yankees and face Mussina tonight. The total is 9 and the under is minus 1.20.

We will also release a play at Hollywood for tonight's second race. We are going with number 2, Pass Me The Sugar who is listed at 9-2 on the morning line. Look for a top effort here from this second time starter who has been off over 11 months and ran well as a two-year old last year at Del Mar. The horse returns at a much lower level for tonight's race and has been working extremely well for trainer Brian Koriner.

Free Selection Monday June 16th

We went 0 for 2 on our free selections here yesterday, but our members were treated to a nice one in the sixth race at Hollywood Park when our top selection, Cuffed, won and paid $24.80. What a nice ride Kerwin John gave that horse for us. Our members also had the over in last night's N.B.A Finals game which easily covered for us.

Tonight, we go with a baseball total. We are taking the under in the Boston-Philadelphia game. Good pitching slated here in this inter-league matchup and we can't see too many runs going up in this one. The total is at 9.

I will also wish good luck to Rocco Mediate today in the U.S. Open Playoff with Tiger Woods. Tiger is like nobody I have ever seen play the game of golf, but it would be nice to see a guy like Rocco win this one..for guys like us.

Belmont Stakes And Lakers Vs. Celtics

"That's why they run the race" I've heard that one before. So what may have happened yesterday at Belmont Park as yet another Triple Crown bid comes up short? Was it the heat?
Was Big Brown over anxious when he left the gate? Was it the nagging hoof injury? The connections say no and I believe them.

Okay, so he just didn't have it Saturday. Maybe next year? Guess that is what keeps us going every day. Horseplayers and racing fans are the ultimate eternal optimists. As long as they have tomorrow's racing form on sale somewhere, there is reason to go on and get up tomorrow and try, try again.

Looking at game two tonight in the NBA Finals from a betting perspective is where we go now. Looking at the total on the game which is at 190 or 191, depending on where you look, we like this game to go over the number. Both teams shot below average in game one, the "get to know the opponents defense" game. Tonight's game should be a higher scoring affair and we see the over as the play.

Door Wide Open For Big Brown-Saturday June 7th

The news came early this morning that Casino Drive had been scratched from today's Belmont Stakes due to the injury in his hoof. What could possibly prevent Big Brown from becoming the first winner of the Triple Crown in 30 years? Dennis Of Cork may come closing late, but it will probably be too little and way too late. Tale Of Ekati did show in his maiden win back in July of '07 that he may like Belmont, but what about the distance? He lost several lengths in the Derby towards the end of the race. Icabad Crane looks to be a plodder who only passed tired horses in the last stages of The Preakness.

Nothing. That is the answer to the question of whether Big Brown has any obstacles other than himself and maybe a premature move by Kent Desourmeax to push the button and ask him to accelerate away from his rivals. If he is patient, and waits until the quarter pole before asking the question, we will see a Triple Crown won today. Too bad there is nothing even close to an "Alydar" here to at least make it interesting. Horse racing will enjoy the brief spotlight that this should create, but what about long term?

Just another question to be answered.

NBA Finals Game One Thursday June 5th

We have finally reached the Finals after a long grueling season and we have the ultimate rivalry revisited as the Lakers and Celtics go at it in game one tonight. We have seen all through the playoffs that the totals have been staying under at the rate of 48 to 30 or 61.53%.

This game tonight should follow suit as the Lakers are underrated on the defensive side of the ball. Their defense has been excellent throughout the playoffs. People still tend to think of the Lakers as "Showtime" and generally see them as an offensive minded team only. The Celtics, especially at home, have shown that they can hold good teams below 90 points on a regular basis.

Tonight's game should be "get to know" night for both teams, and until they figure out each other's defensive strategies for this series, the under is the way to lean.

Pistons-Celtics Wednesday May 28th Free Selection

Going well over here at vegasturfandsports.com this past week. Our members have been treated to some nice wins, especially on the horse racing side. We had two nice winners at Hollywood Park over the long weekend. One on Friday night which paid $13.20 to win, and one on Monday which returned $12.20.

Tonight's game between the Pistons and Celtics looks very much like a play on the under with the total at 173.5. This series has grown in defensive intensity over the last couple of games and we see this game tonight as another slow, halfcourt battle with the focus on defense. Boston has regained home court advantage with their win in Detroit on Saturday and this is a must-win for them before heading back to Detroit for game 6. We have this game in the mid to low 160's. Baseball Free Selection For Saturday May 24th

Our members at vegasturfandsports.com have been doing well with our selections. We had a nice winner at Hollywood Park last night in the third race. The horse, Mikey Bones won and paid $13.20 to win. Our baseball selections at vegasturfandsports went 1-1 yesterday for a net unit loss of .10, not a bad day overall...

Today, Randy Johnson takes the mound against the Braves in Atlanta. The total is at 9 under $1.15 right now and we are taking the under here. The big lefty has been pitching well, especially on the road of late and the Braves have been struggling against left handers. Both teams have excellent bullpens and this should be a low-scoring affair.

Feel free to browse our site and check out the very affordable plans that we have for daily selections. We do not provide a large quantity of picks every day, but strive to win a high percentage of very select plays. We aim to provide an honest, high quality service to our members and we stress the word "service". We usually have at least 2 or 3 highly rated picks each day, sometimes only one, but that is the difference between us and most handicapping services. We aim for a high percentage of cashed tickets rather than a large volume of picks that hit at a much lower percentage.

We hit our game last night with the Mets-Braves second game staying under the total. We are plus 21.85 units since the beginning of 2008, with a record of 53-31-3 across the board.

Handicapping Websites

Preakness Stakes Saturday

This Saturday, The Preakness Stakes will be run with Big Brown as the heavy favorite. Nobody here is going to go against him after watching the dominating performance that he put in at The Kentucky Derby.

The only wagering opportunity that may offer some value, is the exotics. There are some decent payoff potentials with putting Big Brown on top in exactas, trifectas and superfectas. If you think that somehow he might get beat, key him in the first and second spot. Gayego will probably be second choice, and he should be included in exotics. Other contenders are Kentucky Bear and Hey Byrn. Another longshot with an outside chance to finish in the top 4 is Racecar Rhapsody.

Enjoy the race. I will just root for Big Brown to win for what is probably our best shot at a Triple Crown winner in some time. Horse racing needs a hero, a superhorse to bring some much needed positive attention to the sport.

Handicapping Totals In The NBA Playoffs

Since the beginning of 2008, we have a record of 52-30-3 with the free selections here at Vegas Turf And Sports, mostly picking totals on NBA games. The other night, we had the Pistons game under 186.5 and that game was played almost exactly the way we figured it would be with the Pistons hammering the Magic on defense and going on to take the series moving them into the Eastern Conference Finals. Final total on that game was 177, right where we had it.

We have noticed that when looking at some of these playoff matchups, there are some very different factors that go into trying to figure where the total on a game should be. For example, last night's games were Cleveland at Boston, and Utah at the Lakers. My number on the Boston game was in the low 170's with a total listed at 176.5 which may normally be a play on the under. The way the Celtics have played lately, we just could not pull the trigger on under in that game. Of course, they won a hard-fought victory last night, but the game went over the total. Looking at boxscores the next morning, it is easy to see what one of the major factors is during the playoffs and that is the number of free throws that are taken. Fouls seem to be a major factor much more so during the playoffs. Fouls stop the clock and give a team the opportunity to score points at the same time, which is going to affect the total on a game, for sure.

In the second game last night, the Jazz and the Lakers shot 70 free throws!! They made 58 of the 70 and the game only went over by a few points. Our number on that game was right around 200, but I made a note that these two teams had been at the line too many times during this series to warrant a play on the under. Hard to figure beforehand how the game will be called though, in other words, how much physical play will the referees allow or not allow?

The intensity of the playoffs brings more fouls, allowing for points scored with the clock stopped and this must be considered one of your handicapping factors when handicapping totals in the NBA playoffs.

NBA Playoffs Tuesday Magic-Pistons

We pulled out the win last night with the Celtics-Cavaliers game. The Celtics played excellent defense which we expected but so did the Cavaliers. The Celtics continue to have a problem with winning on the road as they dropped this game last night 88-77. The Celts were held to a 12-point fourth quarter and shot 38.6% from the field. We cannot see the Celtics competing for the Championship if they continue to lose games on the road because if you lose one game at home, you take yourself right out of the series when you cannot win in the other team's building.

Tonight, the Pistons will try to end their series with the Orlando Magic. The Pistons probably see this as a must win game, and will pull out their best defense to close it out. They have a chance to finish off the Magic early, get some extra rest, and provide Chauncy Billips with some extra time to come back from his injury before the Eastern Finals get under way. The total is at 186.5 at the time of this writing. Reccomendation: Under

Monday May 12th Celtics-Cavaliers

Tonight, it's game four between these two in Cleveland. Sunday's game saw the Cavaliers come out on fire shooting the lights out and going up 31-13 at the end of the first quarter. For the game, the Cavs shot 53.6% from the floor including 10 of 19 from the 3 point line. The pace of the game was slow, as expected, the only reason for the total ending up at 192 was the Cavs shooting and 24 free-throws made to boot.

Tonight, we look for the Celtics to come out strong on defense early. They have to take the crowd out of it early and keep the Cavaliers from opening up a big lead like in game three. They have promised in the media that they will win this game and show that they can win on the road in the Playoffs. Reccomendation: Under

Tonight we are going to go with the under in the Detroit-Orlando game. I look for the Pistons to bounce back tonight and flex some defensive muscle, which is what they need to come out with a win. Tough to win on the road, especially in the Playoffs, and I think they know that they will have to take the crowd out of it early and force the Magic to play at a slower, more Detroit-like pace. Chauncy Billips is expected to play for the Pistons tonight. We are starting to look at Major League Baseball totals and we will be getting going on that as the NBA season winds down.

Guess we figured wrong in last night's Jazz-Laker game. Once again, it became a free-throw contest with the Lakers winning the game by 10. The Lakers made 35 free throws last night. That was not the difference as far as the total goes, the pace was slightly faster than we expected and the Lakers also shot 57% from the field. Congratulations to Kobe Bryant on his well-deserved MVP award!!

Tonight in the other Western Conference series, the Hornets visit the Spurs in San Antonio. I think we can look for a very tight game here defensively. We will just go with the under tonight with the total at 183. Our numbers say there should be about 176 scored in this game.

Handicapping The NBA Playoffs

So far this Playoff season, we have done pretty well with a record of 8-5-1. One thing I have noticed is that it takes a little more good fortune on your side to come out with a win. Once each series has begun, the linemakers adjust their numbers and no matter how good you are at handicapping the games, it just plain takes some grace from the handicapping gods to be successful. With totals, we are basically crunching numbers and if the two teams play to their trends and averages, our number will be very close to the final score. We also factor in other things like home-away, defensive strategies of the different teams, etc.

We know that over time, everything will trend toward the average, but in the Playoffs, there is so much more intensity on both sides of the ball, and much more at stake. For example, the Boston-Cleveland game last night had a total of 184 opening and was bet down to 182.5 by tip-off time. My numbers on that game were right below the line, so it was a no-play. The Celtics just about shut LeBron James down last night along with the rest of the Cavaliers who shot 30.7% from the field. The pace of the game was slightly lower than expected, but it was the terrible shooting percentage for both teams which is partly attributed to good defense, that caused the game to wind up 76-72.

There is no way to predict shooting percentage, of course. But we usually come very close to possessions per game, and with that, over time we will win more than we lose and that is the what the goal of being a successful handicapper is all about. It only takes about 53% winners betting the same units on each game to show a profit, and we are at over 63% for this NBA season. We will just keep plugging away with what we are doing and it's nice to know that over the long run we will come out ahead of the books.

NBA Playoffs Utah-LA. Wednesday Lakers Free Selection

We dropped one last night as the Orlando-Detroit game got over the total. They scored 58 points in the first quarter and had 64 in the third quarter and the game only went over by 8 points, go figure. We are still hitting at a fantastic 63.63% this season Not bad at all.

Tomorrow night, the Jazz and Lakers battle in game two of their second round series. We had the under on Sunday when the total was 213. The Lakers had 46 free throw attempts and made 38 of them and the game still went under, landing on 207. The linemaker has adjusted the total down some to 211 but we still see Wednesday's game going under. Hopefully, the Jazz will adjust and not commit so many fouls tomorrow. We have this game in the mid to high 190's so we will still go with the under even though the total is two points lower.

NBA Playoffs Monday May 5th- Free Selection

We grabbed another winner yesterday with our selection on the under in the Utah-Los Angeles game. The Lakers took it to the Jazz pretty good and the game was more lopsided than the final score would indicate. The Jazz shot under 38% from the floor and were only 4 of 19 from three-point range. Look for the linemaker to adjust the total on their next game, bringing it down some.

Tonight the Magic and Pistons hook up for the second game of their round two series in Detroit. The Pistons totally dominated Dwight Howard in game one, and according to what I am hearing, they will do the same tonight. The will continue to show him different looks on defense and try to take the Magic out of their offense.

I see the same kind of result tonight as in game one. The total is at 185. I have this game winding up somewhere in the mid-170's. Recommendation: Under.

NBA Playoffs Sunday Jazz-Lakers

Today the second round playoff series between Utah and Los Angeles begins in L.A. This should be a good series, although the Lakers would seem to have an advantage here having been rested and waiting for the Jazz to finish off Houston in a hard-fought 6 game series. On paper, this might seem to be a high-scoring, fast-paced type of matchup, but I see it being more of a defensive chess game.

The Lakers were able to hold the Nuggets to aboout 105 points a game in their series. The Nuggets averaged over 110 points a game throughout the regular season. The Jazz have just finished beating Houston in the first round holding them to just over an average of 87 points per game. I'm thinking that both teams will have their focus on defense in this series, at least until they have had time to feel each other out some and design their offensive strategy. The Lakers are rested since their series ended last Monday and this should give them an advantage on the defensive end of the court. Going to go with the under with the total at 213.

Big Brown Impressive In Derby Win

Well, to say the least, I was wrong about Big Brown. What a performance today in The Kentucky Derby. He wasn't able to make the lead in the early going and he was stuck four wide around the first turn but he was just too good for this field. He made his move around the far turn, still four wide and just overwhelmed the field to draw off and win easy. My selection, Colonel John was way too far back early in the race and never really had a chance although he did make a move around the turn, then he just hung..badly.

It is great to see a horse like this perform like that. With only three starts coming into the Derby and to overcome the obstacle of the far outside post to absolutely overpower the field, this is a genuine Triple Crown candidate if I ever saw one, and I have been watching for almost 40 years.

On a sad note, the filly who ran second, Eight Belles fractured both front ankles after the race while pulling up and had to be destroyed. God, I hate to see that. She put in one helluva effort and beat 18 colts only to have that happen . What a shame.

Hats off to Big Brown and his connections. What a performance!! See you at Pimlico in two weeks.

Kentucky Derby Tomorrow-Our Selection

Tomorrow is the running of the 134th Kentucky Derby, the day that everybody is a horseplayer. Our selection in Colonel John. He is coming off a powerful performance in the Santa Anita Derby in which, after closing in the stretch to win against some pretty slow fractions- he wasn't passing tired horses, he galloped out strong after the race and I think he will bring a huge effort tomorrow.

Big Brown is the morning line favorite but I do not like his post at all. The owners and trainers decided to take the 20 hole when they were limited to choosing from 18,19, or 20. Their thinking was that at least Big Brown would not have anybody outside of him in the run to the first turn. I think his problems will begin early as there is some good early speed breaking right next to him in the form of Gayego and Cowboy Cal. Unless Big Brown can clear the field and get all the way over to at least the 2 or 3 path, he is going to have one wide trip, lose tons of ground and expend alot of energy before he even reaches the backstretch.

Colonel John has tactical speed and can be sitting just off the pace or 6 or 7 lengths behind the leaders depending on the way the race plays out. I like that fact that the veteran Corey Nakatani is riding, he should have him in a striking position turning for home. As long as he avoids traffic trouble, he should be right there at the finish. Much has been said about the fact that Colonel John has not raced on dirt yet as all of his starts have come on synthetic surfaces, but I think he will adapt just fine and turn in a huge performance tomorrow.

Going to also bet an exacta box on Colonel John and Z Fortune

Enjoy the Derby!!

NBA Playoffs Continue- Wednesday Free Selection

We pulled out a win the other night by one point with Boston and Atlanta staying under 190. Some books had this total as low as 187.5 late in the day, good thing we make our wagers early. Betting early in the day gives us the best lines to bet into usually and there is no second guessing involved. We take what we get and live with it.

Tonight, the Celtics and Hawks move back to Boston in what has become a pretty wild series. The surprising Hawks have come back to tie this series at 2-2 and have renewed their confidence some. Problem is, they have to play tonight in front of a rabid crowd of Boston fans who will be ready to give them all they can take and more. Once again, we go for the under here as we look for the Celtics to completely shut down the Hawks early and often and pull away to take a 3-2 lead in the series. I have this game at 175 or 176. Tonight is game four in the Boston-Atlanta series with Boston up 2-1. The Hawks were able to come out with the victory Saturday as the Celtics let down some on defense. The Hawks shot well, especially from three-point range, and the Celtics studied film all day yesterday to try to form a strategy to stop them. With the Celtics being the best defensive team in the league, I am confident that they will do just that tonight. We will go with under on this game. The total is at 190.

Going to go with the under in the San Antonio-Phoenix game. The number is at 201. The Spurs have elevated themselves in this series and are playing much superior basketball. I think they get the sweep today and will control this game's pace from the outset.

Pistons/Sixers Last Night

Just some observations about last night's game between these two. Having made my personal wager on the Sixers plus 5 and over the total of 180 early Friday morning, I tuned into ESPN2 to watch this game, just like millions of others. I am still finding it hard to believe what I saw.

What I watched was the young, upstart Sixers schooling the so-called "second best team in the East" in just about every aspect of basketball. Seemed that every time a shot went up, there was nothing but white jerseys around the basket to rebound and since the Pistons shot under 41% from the field, that occurred often. The Sixers out hustled, out shot and just out played the Pistons in every department. Detroit did contribute to their own demise, of course, with 23 turnovers, 3 for 15 shooting from three-point range and shooting under 70% from the free throw line.

So what is it with this series? Do the Pistons lack focus? Are they complacent? The 76ers are young, playoff inexperienced, and are not supposed to win this series. Just that somebody forgot to tell them or their coach Maurice Cheeks. They do believe they can win and move on to the second round , their fans believe it, and so do I.

As far as the Pistons go, I feel embarrassed for them. They lack focus so far in this series and have apparently not heeded the wake-up call that they received in game 1. If they do not turn this thing around quickly, they will have their asses handed to them and be going home very early.

By the way, I won the bet on Philly plus 5, lost the bet on the over, but it was almost worth it to just sit and root for the Sixers to win the game.

We will take a look at Saturday's matchups and possibly be back with some more free selections.

We will try again tomorrow. So far, the playoffs have been a little more challenging than the last half of the regular season for picking totals. Tonight, the Orlando Magic travel into Chicago to play the Bulls. The Magic have been stumbling lately while trying to win their 50th game of the season. Jeff Van Gundy has challenged his team in the media of late, saying that they have lost their focus, especially on the boards.

The Minnestota Timberwolves went into Orlando the other night and came out with a one-point win and the Magic lost the battle on the boards again losing a game that they should have easily won.

NBA Regular Season Winding Down

As we near the end of the regular season, it becomes a little more difficult to find games with any "meaning", except in the Western Conference, of course. We went 2 for 2 the other night bringing our winning percentage up to just under 63%. A good way to finish and look forward to the playoffs.

Tonight, we again take the under in a Seattle game. The Sonics visit San Antonio in the last game of their Texas trifecta. We see the same thing happening here that happened in both Houston and Dallas..The Sonics are crushed on the offensive end by the Spurs defense who were beaten at home last out by the Suns and held to 77 points..They will take it out on Seattle tonight and flex their muscles..We see the game total in the 170's. Take the under.

Sonics-Spurs Under 186.5

NBA Wednesday April 9th-Free Selections

Grabbed another win last night when the Sonics-Mavs game stayed under the total..Never had to sweat in that one even with the Mavs shooting way over their average from the floor, 3 point range, and the free-throw line..game went under by 20 points..we like those.

Tonight we try again, this time with two picks. Taking the under in the Chicago-Orlando game where the total is at 206.5 and the under 193 in the Sonics-Rockets matchup for obvious reasons, I think.

Bulls-Magic Under 206.5

Sonics-Rockets Under 193

NBA Tuesday April 8th-Free Selection

The Rockets and Clippers cooperated the other night staying under the total..just barely. We are sitting at 61% winning percentage as the regular season winds down..Another under tonight is our pick.

The Sonics visit Dallas tonight where the total is at 203. We look for that same situation here that has brought us a few winners over the last couple of weeks. The Mavs should be able to totally shut down Seattle's offense and cruise to an easy win while resting their starters late, especially Dirk, their scoring machine. I'm thinking something like 105 to 88, or something along those lines. Take the under.

Seattle-Dallas Under 203

NBA Sunday April 6th

Cruised to an easy one the other night..the Rockets and Sonics game was under all the way. They wound up with a total of 145 points in that game, never in doubt. That winner took us over 60 percent again, a excellent winning percentage, not to mention, a money maker.

Tonight we try again with a similiar spot. The Rockets visit the Clippers for their last game of this West Coast trip. We see the similiar circumstances here..the Rockets able to completely shut down the Clips and keep this one under the total, which is at 187.5.

Houston-L.A. Clippers Under 187.5
